Paul Frederic Bowles was a composer of note and a leader among the young American artists in Paris in the 1930s before settling in Tangier, Morocco around the time these Songs were written. He is best-known as a novelist, yet his compositions are highly imaginative. These 'Blue Mountain Ballads' are settings of texts by the influential Southern playwright Tennessee Williams.
