For Soprano, Tenor and Baritone Soli, SATB choir and French Horn solo, this work is based the poem 'The Mystic Trumpeter' by Walt Whitman, which begins
Hark, some wild trumpeter, some strange musician,
Hovering unseen in air, vibrates capricious tunes to-night.
The French Horn may be substituted with piano.
